Another string to our bow

Mickael Korausch, founder of La Bowtique and maker of stunning bow ties, is passionate about fabric. His quest for the finest threads and textiles has taken him all over the world – sourcing silks from Italy and velvets, wools and linens from around the UK. Now he’s added Tengri fabrics to his collection. He shares his insights about this classic yet contemporary accessory…

What inspired you to begin creating your own bow ties?

I was looking for bow ties that would match my personality, but I couldn’t find any that combined premium materials with a contemporary and stylish cut. That’s when I decided to learn much more about bow ties so I could design and make them myself.

This led to me starting La Bowtique, a business dedicated to bow ties, in 2011. Ever since we have been creating beautiful bow ties for tailoring houses on Savile Row and private customers alike.

What goes into the creation of a really superb bow tie?

It’s all about attention to detail, starting with the best fabrics. Once we have the right raw material, it’s a matter of working with contemporary silhouettes to create the perfect accessory.

The details matter because bow ties are all about proportions. To achieve the ideal weight and density for a generous knot, the curves need to be smooth and natural. The design should complement your facial structure, so the tie needs to be classically elegant but not stuffy.

What services does La Bowtique offer?

La Bowtique is driven by a passion for upholding this traditional accessory and an understanding of current trends. We also offer a bespoke service, working with clients to create a bow tie that combines their ideas with our expertise, developing something absolutely unique. Working closely with the most prestigious Savile Row tailors means my bespoke pieces have been worn by some of the world’s most elegant gentlemen.

Where and when might a bow tie be worn?

Almost anywhere and anytime! A bow tie can be worn casually and formally. It’s an accessory that adds a touch of real flair to an outfit. The secret to wearing it well is to tie it and then completely forget about it.

Through the ages, bow ties have been worn by a wide variety of famous artists, writers, architects and academics. This means that bow tie wearers are often perceived as arty, wise or slightly eccentric. But for me, the key point is individual style.

What makes Tengri fabrics so perfect for bow ties?

Tengri fabric is ideal for creating a bow tie with volume and a generous knot. The fabric is excellent for a sophisticated autumn/winter look, for example, to be worn with tweed and flannels.
